Researching accessibility in virtual learning environments

This research was funded by the European Union VISUAL project and undertaken on behalf of the Centre for Human Computer Interaction Design at City University London. Drivers and barriers to implementing accessibility in virtual learning environments for disabled students in UK further education (FE) and higher education (HE) were examined. Key findings of the report Return to SENDA included:

  • lack of awareness in FE and HE about the needs of disabled students
  • lack of user-centred design approaches by commercial developers and educational institutions
  • lack of technical web knowledge by content authors
  • skills gap in instructional design
  • lack of strategic leadership to tackle inclusive learning
